MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Oxetacaine is a topical anesthetic that effectively relieves pain when applied to the mouth and food pipelining. The antacids neutralize stomach acid and prevent further irritation of the food pipe. Antacid also thickens the liquid to help carry the oxetacaine and coat the food pipe. Aluminum Hydroxide acts on the hydrochloric acid in the stomach by neutralization, forming Aluminium Chloride salt and water. Magnesium Hydroxide increases peristaltic activity causing osmotic retention of fluids, thus resulting in bowel evacuation. It also reduces stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to form Magnesium Chloride.
INDICATIONS:
It is used in gastrointestinal disorders manifested with hyperacidity and increased gas production. It may be administered as monotherapy or treat gastro-oesophagitis reflux, chronic diarrhea, and non-ulcer dyspepsia.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
In patients with renal insufficiency, there is a risk of increased magnesium and aluminum serum concentration due to decreased excretion through the kidneys. Do not use in patients allergic to magnesium and aluminum.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea and constipation may occur in some patients.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNING:
Extensive use of aluminum-containing antacids may cause hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels in the blood), which in severe cases could lead to muscle weakness, anorexia, and osteomalacia (softening of the bones due to defective bone mineralization).
