MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Ceftriaxone inhibits the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis by preferentially binding to the specific PBPs located inside the bacterial cell wall. Ceftriaxone interferes with PBP-mediated cell wall synthesis leading to cell lysis and death. Sulbactam, by irreversibly binding to the beta-lactamases produced by the bacteria protects the beta-lactam ring of ceftriaxone and conserves the activity. The combination helps extend its utility in the treatment of a broad range of infections caused by organisms resistant to the antibiotic alone.
INDICATIONS:
Renal and urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, infections in a dialysis unit.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. Hypersensitivity to penicillin may predispose the patient to the possibility of allergic cross-reactions.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Diarrhoea, nausea & vomiting, headache, dizziness, increase in serum creatinine.
