It is a third-generation oral cephalosporin, effective against a wide spectrum of sensitive gram-positive, gram-negative & anaerobic bacterial pathogens including Beta-lactamase producing strains. It has a high affinity for penicillin-binding proteins with varying sites of activity. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis. The elimination half-life is about 3 hours, with little variation over the usual therapeutic dosage range.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It binds to one of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of the peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death.
INDICATIONS:
Infections of respiratory, urinary & biliary tract, and other salmonella infections.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this medicine.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Diarrhoea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting. Hypersensitivity reactions like skin rashes, and urticaria.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), live bacterial vaccines, probenecid.
DOSAGE:
As directed by the physician.
STORAGE:
Store at room temperature, away from light.
