Mechanism of Action: Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that affects the cough centre in the brain. It works by decreasing the urge to cough, providing relief from dry or unproductive coughing without causing sedative effects. Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that works by competitively blocking the H1 receptors for histamine. Histamine is a chemical released during allergic reactions, leading to symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. By inhibiting the H1 receptors, chlorpheniramine reduces the effects of histamine, providing relief from allergy symptoms. Together, these two components in a combination medication aim to address multiple symptoms associated with coughs and colds, including allergy-related symptoms.
