Mechanism of Action: Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that works by selectively blocking the action of histamine at the H1 receptors. Histamine is a chemical released during allergic reactions and contributes to symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose. By inhibiting the H1 receptors, cetirizine reduces the effects of histamine, providing relief from allergy symptoms. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that affects the cough center in the brain. It works by decreasing the urge to cough, providing relief from dry or unproductive coughing without causing the sedative effects. Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. This constriction reduces swelling and congestion in the nasal tissues, making it easier to breathe. It is commonly used to relieve nasal congestion associated with conditions like the common cold or allergies. Together, these three components in a combination medication aim to address multiple symptoms associated with coughs and colds, including allergy-related symptoms, coughing, and nasal congestion.
