Azithromycin Dihydrate | I.P.
Equi.to Azithromycin Anhydrous | 500 mg

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Azithromycin, like all macrolide antibiotics, prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their ability to make proteins. It acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms and, thus, interfering with microbial protein synthesis. Due to the differences in the way proteins are made in bacteria and humans, macrolide antibiotics do not interfere with humans’ ability to make proteins.
INDICATIONS:
Azithromycin is used to treat many different infections, including non-streptococcal bacterial pharyngitis, gastrointestinal infections such as travellers diarrhoea, respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, cellulitis.
DOSAGE:
As directed by the physician.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
No major contraindications but patients with known hypersensitivity to the active ingredients. Avoid taking during pregnancy.
PRECAUTIONS:
Azithromycin should be given with care to patients with severe hepatic disease.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
It is recommended that azithromycin not be taken at the same time as aluminium- or magnesium-based antacids, because antacids will bind the azithromycin and prevent it from being absorbed from the intestine. Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after antacids.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Azithromycin is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are diarrhoea or loose stools, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting
