DESCRIPTION: Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used particularly for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, amebicide, and antiprotozoal. Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal that belongs to the class of imidazole and triazole derivatives.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Clotrimazole acts by inhibiting the fungal Cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14-demethylase, and thus impairs ergosterol synthesis, leading to a cascade of membrane abnormalities in the fungus. Metronidazole is reduced by bacterial nitroreductase to an unstable intermediate, which interacts with DNA effectively, preventing further replication.
INDICATIONS: Vaginitis due to fungi, mainly Candida and/or Trichomonas. Infection of leucorrhoea and superinfection with bacteria sensitive to gram-positive and gram-negative Bacteroides.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS: Burning, stinging, redness, swelling, fever, irritation.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS: Metronidazole is carcinogenic in mice and rats. Unnecessary use of the drug should therefore be avoided.
