Chloramphenicol Palmitate is a dichloroacetic acid derivative. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and is bacteriostatic. It contains 55.5-59.5% of chloramphenicol, i.e., approx. 174 mg of Chloramphenicol Palmitate is equivalent to 100 mg of Chloramphenicol.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Chloramphenicol is hydrolyzed in the upper intestinal tract into the parent drug. It is lipid-soluble, diffuses through the bacterial cell membrane, and reversibly binds to the 50 S subunit of bacterial ribosomes where transfer of amino acids to growing peptide chains is prevented, thus inhibiting peptide bond formation and subsequent protein synthesis.
INDICATIONS:
It is effective against broad spectrum bacterial (gram-positive and gram-negative) diseases.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Chloramphenicol is contraindicated if another drug can be used instead due to its potential to cause bone marrow depression.
SIDE EFFECTS:
This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vomiting, which should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Diabetes medicine, warfarin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifampin, other antibiotics, vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid. This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNING:
Blood dyscrasias may be associated with the use of chloramphenicol. Adequate blood studies must be made. Use extreme caution when giving this drug to children under two years old.
