Mechanism of Action: Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme is involved in the regulation of blood flow in the penis. Inhibition of PDE5 results in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a chemical messenger that promotes relaxation of smooth muscle cells in the penile blood vessels. This relaxation allows for increased blood flow to the penis, leading to an erection when combined with sexual stimulation. Essentially, sildenafil enhances the natural physiological process of achieving and maintaining an erection.
